Extraordinary Tips to Mentor Kids Effectively

1. Experiential Learning

If you wish to mentor your child effectively, try to add elements of your experience appropriately. Do not lecture the child about the good and bad things you have discovered. Instead, mention all relevant details stating your point of view. And involve the child in discovering more facts with the help of the information that is already available. Experience can add great value to your child’s learning. And also reduces the chances of making grave mistakes (that they are likely to make).

For example, a long drive can explain why carrying a first aid box is better through an example of your past. Such examples can apprise the child of practical problems like availability challenges in remote areas or the importance of immediate first aid in cases of emergency. Experiential learning is a great way of making even the most complex concepts easily understandable for the child. And it is a great way of protecting them from potential damage.

2. Building Life Skills

Life skills are essential to succeed in everyday life. Your mentoring is incomplete if you do not help the child to develop effective communication skills, critical thinking, self-control, self-awareness, stress management, etc. These skills are imperative for general life and workplace success. All in all, these are the foundation of leading a quality life in adulthood.

Life Skills

Your mentoring can help the child to grow as an emotionally intelligent individual who can face the ups and downs of life easily. Self-aware children understand the positive ways of dealing with negative emotions/feelings, which have also helped reduce talking back habits. These skills teach the child how to accept and manage varied emotions across the stages of life. These are also great support to deal with situations that require an attitude of ‘moving on.’

Besides these benefits, these life skills are also a good way of teaching the child the importance of making mindful choices. They can learn how to make good friends. And also how to distinguish between good and bad habits/choices in life.

3. Focusing on the Bigger Picture

A parent who mentors the child well teaches them to look beyond the weaknesses/defeats and see the bigger picture. It is about teaching the child the relevance of failing to learn new things and identifying workable areas. Defeats or situations do not define us. Instead, these are a way of learning to see opportunities in things that do not turn out well. An individual’s caliber cannot be identified solely basis the academic achievements. Instead, it is beyond these accomplishments and includes qualities like integrity, resilience, perseverance, etc.

4. Positive Leadership

Your leadership also matters when it comes to mentoring your kid. A positive mindset depicts optimism. And the willingness to respect others makes a lot of impact in shaping your child’s personality. Remember that you need to be a positive role model for the child. And appreciate all sincere efforts through verbal and non-verbal appreciation. Your positive reinforcement strategies will motivate the kid to develop essential qualities like perseverance. This will, in turn, help in building a strong and resilient personality. And the individual will develop a ‘never say die’ spirit.

Leadership plays a crucial role in defining one’s attitude toward losing. Because children who know how to move on after a defeat also make the most of the learning, which is the greatest benefit of not winning. Life comes with numerous opportunities. But our kids need to develop the qualities that can help them thrive despite all odds in life.

5. Interactive Environment

Families that encourage open conversations help children to develop self-confidence. Try to mentor your kid by giving them the freedom of speech without judging the child’s perception or thought process. As an adult, you can always give your input. But make sure that these are free from biases/negativity. And promote harmony within the family. Make your words meaningful and avoid a lecturing tone.

Open communications are a great way of promoting respect for varied viewpoints. It also helps develop divergent thinking, a great quality to survive in this competitive world. Your family ambiance is a perfect channel to create a love for learning through healthy discussions. You can also teach your child the importance of developing a love for learning by being inquisitive.

6. Inter-Personal Relationships

Effective mentoring is only possible by establishing strong family bonds. Remember that your interpersonal relationships are based on honesty and transparency. Be honest about your life happenings, be it your strengths or weaknesses. All the relationships in your family are interwoven with the strings of faith, and the bonds work on mutual trust that you need to develop over time. Never try to be boastful about things that you have accomplished. Instead, stay humble in your approach. And treat your family concerning set the right example.
