Posted on 23/12/202325/04/2024 By Renu Saroha No Comments on Intermittent Production System: Characteristics, Advantages & Disadvantages

The device of the intermittent production system does not envisage ongoing manufacturing for storage cause; production activities take region only to meet an order of product. The flow of raw cloth is not non-stop, and manufacturing facilities are extremely flexible, designed to look after a wide range of merchandise. Because of the character of this machine, an ongoing adjustment is expected from the manufacturing branch. There is also a need for sufficient storage preparations between operations to ensure that individual operations consist of independently and men and machines are put to use judiciously.

Machine shops, hospitals, and widespread workplaces, wherein the simple nature of inputs continues converting with the changing product layout, are some examples of intermittent production tactics.

Under the intermittent production technique, neither a single manner is helpful, nor there may be any uniformity in the production methods. Flexibility is the key phrase to explain an intermittent production system method. Even the simple product designs remain changed now and then.

Definition of Intermittent Production System

According to Buffa, “Intermittent Production Systems are the ones in which the facilities have to be flexible enough to handle quite a few products and sizes or wherein the primary nature of the hobby imposes exchange of critical characteristics of the input.” There isn’t an unmarried system; the production usually needs to be uniform, and the fundamental product layout adjustments every so often. The facilities can adjust manufacturing in step with the order or time.

Characteristics of Intermittent Production System

The basic characteristics of intermittent production system are as follows:

1) Under this manner, wide-ranging merchandise handles, well-known cause machines, and systems are beneficial.

2) The production system is not continuous, as periodic breaks take place in between.

3) The sequence of operations is sometimes uniform; it differs from one activity or batch to another. Necessary adjustments are helpful now and then in keeping with the nature of the activity or batch.

The group wherein the institution contributors have equal talents and work increases the people’s performance.

Disadvantages of Intermittent Production System

The following are the limitations of intermittent production systems:

1) More Costly for High Volumes

The machines that are used within the processing are much less expensive. However, they work slowly and provide inferior first-class output compared to big-cause machines. The skillful operations are given better pay compared to semi-skilled or unskilled. Hence, the constant fee is lower, but the variable costs in line with the unit are higher for fashionable machines.

2) Complex Operations Planning and Control

Making plans and controlling a device may take much work for the intermittent. If there is an increase in the range of jobs, preserving the record of individual jobs can be challenging. There is lots of office work, requiring specialists to record the priorities and track unique jobs.

3) Large In-system Inventory

It additionally has a few method inventories. The form of the outputs and scale of operation will also increase, and the in-technique stock will also increase. Above all, there’s a huge storage of in-process inventory if there may be a problem within the operation planning and manipulation function. It is one of the demerits of intermittent production system. It will increase the need for operations and interrupt the operation place’s appearance, making it risky.
