The term barrier approach is “hurdle”, “issue”, or “obstacle”. Thus limitations to verbal exchange mean hurdles or barriers in transmitting the message from the sender to the receiver.

The hassle of verbal exchange arises because various obstacles may prevent a verbal exchange, filter out a part of it, or supply it with incorrect meaning. These limitations are known as communique obstacles.

  • A large no. Organizational problems are because of boundaries to verbal exchange.
  • It is important to find out such limits & take steps to cast off them to accomplish effective verbal exchange.

Useful Method to Remove Barriers to Communication

The following steps must be taken to remove barriers to communication.

1. Know your Purpose

the sender should know his purpose; if his objective is clear, half of the battle is won.

2. Know your Audience

The sender must know his audience & his point of view. If he keeps his audience in his mind & communicates, many barriers are removed automatically.

3. Use of Simple Language

The use of simple language removes barriers to communication. The receiver easily understands short sentences & easy words.

4. Relevant Detail

The sender should include only relevant detail. He should not use unnecessary & irrelevant details because it creates a barrier to communication.

5. Review before your Communicate

Before you communicate, you should review that you want to communicate. You should concentrate on essential points and see that the message that your want to transmit remains its meaning.

6. Make it Attractive & Interesting

The sender must make his communication attractive & interesting. It should be well structured. It should be formatted appropriately. It should be well-organized & well-argued.

7. Right Choice of Channel

The sender should choose the appropriate channel to convey his message if the choice of channel is wrong. There can be a barrier to communication.

8. Proper Feedback

The receiver must be given a chance to provide proper feedback. Efforts should be made to allow him sufficient time to grasp the message & promote an appropriate response.

9. Minimize Environmental & Cultural Barriers

Competent Communicators minimize environmental & cultural barriers. They try to make their communication free from cultural barriers.
